The brewing of a “Baltic Porter” developed by homebrewer Sean Wall of Hamburg  took place at the Flying Bison Brewing Company on Saturday, June 10th . Wall’s brew was named “Best of Show” during the Erie County Fair’s 2017 Home Brew Competition. Wall worked alongside Flying Bison Brewery’s professional brew master Colin Herzog to produce the official County Fair Beer that will be ready for purchase during the 178th Erie County Fair this August.

“The brewing of our Fair beer means we are just one step closer to celebrating the best 12 days of summer at the Fair,” said Paula Smith, Competitive Exhibits Coordinator for the Erie County Agricultural Society.

According to judges who follow guidelines published by Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), Baltic Porters often have complex flavors that include those of layered malt and dark fruit. Often the brew contains caramel, toffee and/or licorice notes. The Fair’s winning entry is dark brown with ruby highlights in appearance filled with plum, dark cherry and raisin aromas.

Once crowned “Best In Show,” the winner submitted the beer’s recipe to the professional brew staff at Flying Bison Brewery. Kegged product will be offered by Try-It Distributing to select Western New York establishments for public purchase prior to the Fair. During the Erie County Fair a limited number of on premise locations will feature the award winning beer.

The Fair’s competition, now in its fourth year, drew 182 homebrews. Submissions were evaluated by 24 judges on Thursday, April 20th and Saturday, April 22nd at the Fairgrounds.

The Erie County Fair Home Brew competition is sponsored by the Erie County Agricultural Society with support from Try-It Distributing, Flying Bison Brewing and KATZ Americas.

The judging of home brewed beer is just one of the competitions held annually by the Erie County Fair. In 2017, over 12,500 entries are expected to be received and judged by the Fair’s Competitive Exhibits Office. The wide range of ribbon winning categories include agriculture, conservation and creative arts among others. 2017 entry information is available online at
